COMMENT:
1. Since Martha's husband, Vinson, died in 1842, the records show the property being sold in 1846 by Martha Knight.
2. 26 January 1846 Martha was sealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith for eternity.
3. 26 January 1846 Martha was sealed to Heber Chase Kimball for time.
4. In 1920, descendents of Vinson Knight petitioned President Joseph F. Smith to restore Vinson's family to him. This was done and the families sealing to the Prophet Joseph Smith, Jr. was nullified.
Name transcribed from Winter Quarters Wards Membership Lists 1846 - 1848. Taken from a variety of historical sources. They are not complete, and because of the difficulty reading handwriting, may not be entirely accurate. Most of the lists seem to be from the winter of 1846 - 47, but some are from later. In addition, people often moved to better housing, thus changing wards. Sources for these lists are: bishop's reports, high council meeting minutes, tithing records, and 'census' reports of widow, soldier's wives and other unassigned members of wards. The original records are available at the Historical Department, Archives Division, of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City Utah.
Note: Stated in record above; "2 in the family, widow"

Photos
|
 | Photograph of a Daguerreotype believed to be taken of Joseph Smith circa 1843. This photo is believed to have been taken of a small Daguerrotype of Joseph Smith by his son, and subsequently transmitted to the Library of Congress in about 1879. Minor restoration has taken place, but most experts are of the opinion that the photograph are authentic.
TheDaguerreotype process was developed in 1821, and first made use of by the United States government in about 1926. Commercial public use of this process began about 1829. |
 | Carthage Jail
Note 2nd story window and well Joseph Smith was imprisoned in the Carthage Jail with three other prominent Mormons. A group attacked them, at which time Joseph was shot trying to escape through the second story window. He fell to the ground, still alive, and was dragged to the well and propped up, only to be shot again. |
 | Carthage Jail upper bedroom. An LDS missionary is showing Linda Snowden through this historical building. Joseph was imprisoned, but allowed to stay with his party in the jailer's bedroom and use the kitchen. A large cell is also on the second floor; but for Joseph's safety he was not locked inside. Unfortunately, the mob succeeded in taking over the jail--the jailers wife and daughter being the only ones there at the time--with such action taking Joseph's life. |
 | Joseph and Emma's first home in Nauvoo, Illinois. This home was the first home Joseph and Emma constructed after arriving in Nauvoo. The first area built was the wood portion, being quite primitive by today's standards. The Mormons prospered, and the quality of the homes within several years of establishing the community became quite comfortable, with many amenities that were unusual for the period |
 | Mansion House
Nauvoo, Illinois Joseph and his family lived in Mansion House, and it was designed as a hotel to accommodate visitors to the city and Church institutions. A portion of the building was lost to a fire, and never rebuilt. Mansion house is today an outstanding example of early-to-mid 1800 architecture and family life. |
