  • Name Marie Susanne FRIES
Born 14 Feb 1851  Uhfeltz, Haut-Rin, France Find all individuals with events at this location
    • A twin to Rose: birth record found in LDS film #759584
    Gender Female
    Died Abt 1852
    • Susan likely did not emigrate to the United States with the family; and the assumption is that she died before the family left.
    Notes
    • Source: Mary Lou Fries--Susan was the twin sister of Rose Ann. Susan reportedly died as an infant--possibly before the family left France in 1853. However, the arrival of the Fries family in New York City in 1853 aboard the passenger ship Rockall contains a possible explanation.

Listed along with the family members of Erasmus Fries are those of the family of Aloise Augustin. The Augustin family are listed directly below the Fries family on the manifest. Other similarities include
~ Both families originated in France, and spoke French as their primary language
~ Both families were going to Ohio
~ Both families had a daughter named "Cath" and a son named "Xavier."
~ Both fathers were listed as 'farmers.'
~ The Fries family had a daughter named Rosa, age represented as 2/4 (six months).
~ The Augustin family had a daughter named Susanna, age represented as 2/4 (six months).

Family tradition (Velma Snowden) tells the story that 'three brothers' came to the United States together. The Augustin family could possibly have been one of the brothers--albeit a brother in law. The wife of Augustin was named Cath--clearly a family name of both families.

A possible explanation could be that the Augustin family had agreed to care for Susanna on the trip, either making it easier for the Fries family or meeting the requirements of ticketing, berthing, or other cause. While this could be a coincidence, the statistical possibility of a Rosa and Susanna--identified as twins of the Fries through family tradition, being in the same ship coming to the United States, and heading to Ohio--being sisters would be correlated fairly high. Certainly worthy of more research.

Passenger list--Ths Ship "Rockall" Departed Havre de Grace, France
The Fries family traveled aboard the ship Rockall, landing in New York on the 12th of December, 1953. Family legend has it that they traveled with two other relatives. From birth records we know that children Rose and Suzanne were twins, but Rose is only listed on the ship's manifest. Her age is listed as 2/4 years--or mathematically about six months. Note that the family listed beneath them on the manifest has a daughter aged 2/4, whose name is Suzanne. Additionally, they are from the same area as the Fries, and are bound for the same place in the United States. Follow-up research has not provided a tie; and there appears to be no association. But a connection has not been ruled out.
